Indian Ocean Dipole
  • Difference in sea surface temperature between Arabian Sea (western Indian Ocean) and an eastern pole in the eastern Indian Ocean south of Indonesia.
  • Positive IOD winds over the Indian Ocean blow from east to west (from Bay of Bengal towards Arabian Sea).-Indian Ocean near Africa Coast being much warmer and eastern Indian Ocean around Indonesia becoming colder and dry.
  • negative dipole year, reverse happens
  • Positive IOD is good for Indian Monsoons

El-Nino, El-Niño Modoki & La-Nina
  • El Nino-unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean, Trade winds coming from South America normally blow westward towards Asia during Southwest Monsoon. Aks  El Niño-Southern Oscillation cycle (ENSO). Warming of the Pacific Ocean results in weakening of these winds
  • El Nino Modoki
  • La Nina- piling up of cold water near the West Coast of South America - results in strong monsoon
